Edwards jabs Landrieu about governor's race

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The only announced Democratic candidate in Louisiana's 2015 governor's race is sending a message that he wants re-elected New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to stay out of it.

Rep. John Bel Edwards says he expects the Democratic mayor to keep his promise to serve a full, four-year term. That would stop Landrieu from becoming a threat to Edwards' ability to coalesce Democratic support in the governors' race.

Edwards issued a statement Monday congratulating Landrieu on his election win this weekend. Edwards also pointed out that Landrieu said during a mayoral debate that he would serve a full term if re-elected.

Edwards said, "I can tell you that when I make a promise, I keep it."

Republicans running for governor include Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne and U.S. Sen. David Vitter.
