Great economic news for Acadiana. If you are looking for a job apparently this is the place to be. The Federal Bureau of Labor released numbers today ranking Lafayette Parish as number one in the state, when it comes to new hires.
"Lafeyette has led this state and we have created more jobs particularly in the last year than almost any place in the country," said Gregg Gothreaux President/CEO Lafeytte Economic Development Authority.
According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the national average for unemployment was 8.2% in the first quarter of this year. Louisiana was 7.3% but in Lafayette the numbers were even better coming in two and a half percent lower than the state average at 4.8%.
"Lafayette is always ranked in some of the highest numbers, in fact I was reading one from Forbes Magazine that said we were in the top ten for business growth," said Tina Johnstone of Lafayette Business Career & Solution Center.
Johnstone and Gothreaux agree, unemployment is down because oil, gas, and the energy industry are all doing well. Also the manufacturing sector and health care are creating more opportunities.
"Louisiana has weathered the storm much better than the rest of the country," said Gothreaux.
He also says Lafayette is one of the top ten communities in almost every important salary wage growth and its a growing place for businesses and employees.
"We've had a greater growth in wages so we're not only growing jobs, We're growing quality jobs," said Gothreaux.
When the Bureau of Labor Statistics compared the first quarter of last year to this year wages in Lafayette, Acadia and Vermilion Parishes all recorded growth above the 5.4 national increase.
