a $3 million Community Development Block Grant to assist the
parish's recovery from hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
The grant request the jury approved Tuesday includes projects in
the towns of Slaughter and Jackson and the villages of Wilson and
The Advocate reports most of the money sought, $2.4 million,
would be spent on parish-wide road and drainage repairs. The
remainder would be used to buy generators to help supply emergency
power during and after future storms.
Grant consultant Hunt Guillot and Associates of Baton Rouge
concluded Gustav and Ike brought heavy rain and floodwater that
penetrated underlying roadbeds and caused road-base failures
throughout the parish.
