East Baton Rouge animal shelter accused of cruelty

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Some employees accuse the nonprofit group that took over the East Baton Rouge animal shelter of mismanagement and cruelty to animals.

The Companion Animal Alliance took over the city-parish shelter 14 months ago to gradually turn it into a no-kill shelter. Board President Christel Slaughter denies claims of animal cruelty but says that management needs to do better at telling the staff and the public about policy changes.

The public agency that used to run the shelter says that CAA lacks qualified supervisors, policy and organization, and that employees are frustrated and lack confidence in CAA. The Animal Control and Rescue Center says it investigated complaints from the public and alliance employees.

An employees' email to CAA board members in September listed 27 allegations, including underfed animals.
