Early Learning Center Applications Available

Press Release: United Way of Acadiana is accepting application for two Early Learning Centers in Vermilion and Lafayette parishes to open later this year.

By the end of 2010, FREE childcare and early childhood education programs for qualifying families with infants and toddlers up to three years of age, as well as prenatal services for expecting women, will be available to families in Vermilion Parish and the 70501 zip code in Lafayette Parish. The two centers will serve a total of 103 children.

"United Way of Acadiana is proud to bring the services of Early Head Start to Acadiana and provide new opportunities for families in our communities," said Margaret Trahan, United Way of Acadiana President/CEO. "These services support our PACT for Education by addressing kindergarten readiness."

United Way of Acadiana received a multi-year, federal grant for over $3 million from the federal Administration for Children & Famililes Office of Head Start to deliver these expanded services to Acadiana. These services will be free and include developmentally appropriate educational activities, dental, health and mental health services, family visits and socializations. The program also accepts children with disabilities, pregnant women and will provide home based services as well as have center based sites.

UWA has also partnered with the Cecil J.Picard Center at UL to provide start-up support, teacher training and program evaluation.

Enrollment is taking place now and space is limited!

Eligibility Requirements:
Family MUST live in Vermilion Parish or the 70501 zip code only in Lafayette.
Children must be between the ages of 0-3.
Must meet Federal Poverty Income Guideline.
To be eligible for Home -Based Services a child may be between birth and three years of age. The child must be living with a parent/guardian who is available to meet for 90 minutes each week in the home.
