BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The East Baton Rouge Parish school system is sending its 6,000-plus employees a letter letting them know they could be laid off to balance the system's books.
The Advocate reports the school board approved a resolution Thursday invoking its Reduction In Force policy.
The Reduction In Force resolution is just the beginning of a lengthy budget-cutting process.
A general notice letter is to go out in the mail to roughly 6,250 school system employees. By law, the school system can't lay off anyone for 30 days. After that, the system will send a letter to the employees who will be laid off.
Last year, the school system projected a shortfall of $34 million for the 2012-13 school year and an updated figure has not been released.
