On Friday, September 7, from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office conducted a DWI checkpoint in Calcasieu Parish.

Troopers and deputies arrested 6 impaired drivers for DWI. In addition, nineteen (19) other citations were written which consisted of the following:
6 driving under suspension
1 insurance violation
1 careless operation
1 improper turn
1 neon license plate
2 expired motor vehicle inspection decal
2 no driver's license
1 improper lane usage
2 driving left of center
1 seatbelt violation
1 open alcoholic container

Last year, Troop D investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities. Of those 20 fatalities, 10 (50%) were killed by impaired drivers (alcohol and/or drugs). Alcohol and/or drug use may affect motor control by distorting one's judgment of motion, form, and distance. It can also affect reflexes and reduce reaction time.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
