A 22 year old is in critical condition after a major crash involving an 18-wheeler. About 1:15 am Saturday morning, Lafayette Police responded to the southbound lane of I-49 near Butcher Switch Road regarding a major crash. Traffic investigators say a vehicle was traveling south on I-49 when it hit the rear of an 18-wheeler which had slowed down for traffic. The vehicle caught fire with the driver trapped in the vehicle. Lafayette Fire Department personnel were able to get the driver out of the car after 40 minutes. The driver, a 22 year old male, was transported to an area hospital and is listed in critical condition. The driver of the truck was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
