LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A Lake Charles man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for his part in the March 2010 death of 14-year-old Alexus Rankins.
State District Judge Clayton Davis sentenced Sean Newton on Wednesday.
Rankins was shot during a drive-by shooting near the Prien Lake Mall.
The American Press reports Newton was convicted May 24 of first-degree murder, obstruction of justice and inciting to riot.
Prosecutor Cynthia Killingsworth said the state recommended the maximum sentences for Newton's convictions.
Killingsworth said the evidence during the trial pointed to him as the shooter.
