DOTD will continue to respond to winter weather and icy road conditions through the night

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will continue to monitor and respond to winter weather and icy road conditions through the night.

Roads will open to the public once they are safe. Once the temperature gets above freezing, and the roads have time to thaw, roads will be opened. DOTD will do everything possible throughout the night to keep Louisiana's highways and interstate system open. This includes applying de-icing agents such as salt and sand throughout the night and into Saturday morning. However, if roads are deemed unsafe, they will be closed. When the temperature gets above 32 degrees, the roads will still need time to thaw from an extended period of time of below-freezing temperatures and moisture.

Elevated highways and bridges have continued to freeze and pose dangerous driving conditions in many portions of the I-49, I-10 and I-12 coordior as moisture and freezing temperatures bombarded the state.

DOTD crews began sanding, salting and applying other de-icing materials on bridges and major corridors Thursday night through all of Friday. Since most of the impacted areas experienced temperatures well below freezing for most of the day, this prevented the de-icing materials from being able to create traction and caused a majority routes to be closed to traffic for most of the day.

Motorists are reminded not to drive unless it's imperative. If you must drive, use extra caution when traveling on roadways during hazardous weather conditions. Stay off the roads whenever possible during winter weather and unsafe, icy road conditions.

The following roads have been closed due to impacts from winter weather conditions. Please keep in mind that road closures are subject to change quickly. For the latest updates please visit
