Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at
First United Methodist Church for Donald Harl Jones, 85, who died October 7,
2012 in Crowley.
Rev. Charles Crews pastor of First United Methodist Church will be
officiating for the services. The family is requesting visiting hours to be
held Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home and
Wednesday from 9 a.m. to the time of service at First United Methodist
Church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Throughout his life, Mr. Jones was honored with numerous awards, citations
and was a member of several organizations both pertaining to his profession
and his philanthropy. He was honored as Lion of the Year by the Crowley
Lions Club in 1959 and was also recognized by his alma mater for
Extraordinary Service in 1993 and he and his wife, Florence were named
Volunteer of the Year in 2000 to the University of Tennessee. He served on
the Board of Directors for the First National Bank as well as the Financial
Corporation of Louisiana.
Don was born November 4, 1926 in Crowley, LA to Lara J. Jones and Edwina
Harl Jones. He attended Crowley High School and graduated from the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville in Geology. After graduating from
college he returned to Crowley and began his career in oil and gas
exploration and investments.
He was a member of the American Legion of Crowley; the Board of Advisors for
the Department of Geological Sciences for the University of Tennessee; the
Board of Visitors of College of Arts and Sciences for the University of
Tennessee; the Crowley Chamber of Commerce; the Crowley Fire and Police
Civil Service; the First United Methodist Church of Crowley; The Greater
Crowley Industrial Development Corporation; the Crowley Lions Club; the
Louisiana State Science Foundation; the Masonic Lodge of Crowley; the Public
Affairs Research Council of Louisiana; the Scottish Rite of Lake Charles;
the Shriners of Lake Charles; the American Association of Petroleum
Geologists where he was a Charter Member of Environmental Geosciences.
Don also enjoyed hunting and watching high school, and college sports; he
will be missed by his community, colleagues, friends, and his family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Florence Sanders Jones; two sons,
Kyle and Greg and his wife, Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Kyle Jones,
Lauren Jones, and Michael St. John.
Mr. Jones is preceded in death by his parents, Lara and Edwina Harl Jones,
Sr.; and one brother, L.J. Jones, Jr.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Jones, Michael St. John, Mannie Seale, Andy
Schmitz, Kevin Ireland, and Walter Monceaux. Honorary pallbearers will be
Dr. Cason deleHoussaye, Dr. Jimmy Buatt, Dr. Warren Neel, Dr. T.L. McNeely,
Jr., Anthony Stevenson, and B.I. Moody. Posthumous pallbearers are Richard
Seale, and Glenn Neel.
