Displaced from 1 camp, city's homeless set up 2nd

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans residents blocks from the Pontchartrain Expressway say homeless people evicted from beneath that elevated highway have moved to their neighborhood.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that residents say they've had no luck getting the city's attention.

The city swept through the encampment below the highway early Thursday, saying garbage, human waste and rats had created a public health concern.

The first tents were set up on a grassy median at Calliope and Camp Streets only hours after the 4:30 a.m. sweep. By Saturday about 30 people appeared to be living there.

Local resident Jeff Keiser wrote in an email to city officials Thursday that if there was a public health concern, it has moved from one side of St. Charles Ave. to the other side.
