VIENNA (AP) - Diplomats say both sides benefited from a recent meeting of technical experts from Iran and six world powers focused on Tehran's controversial nuclear program. But they emphasize that they were not negotiations meant to overcome divisions that have stymied recent high-level talks.

Instead, they say, experts for both sides went into the nitty-gritty of their proposals at their meeting that ended Wednesday, and it is now up to officials at that higher level to decide whether that more detailed knowledge can serve as the basis for new negotiations.

The U.S. and its allies fear Iran may use its nuclear program to develop weapons. Tehran insists its atomic activities are peaceful.

The diplomats demanded anonymity Thursday because they are not authorized to discuss details of the closed meeting.
