BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State health officials say the federal
government has OK'd Louisiana's plan for a statewide electronic
health record network.
The Department of Health and Hospitals says Friday's approval
means the state can now get millions of dollars to start building
the network.
The plan is meant to let doctors and others in the health-care
system exchange records securely. For example, a doctor in
Shreveport could see records for a patient evacuated from Houma
because of a hurricane. Or a doctor treating a heart problem could
tell if a new prescription would conflict with medicine prescribed
by a doctor across town for a different condition.
The Louisiana Health Care Quality Forum got a $10.6 million
federal grant last March. Some was for planning, but federal
approval was needed to get the rest.
