MANSFIELD, La. (AP) - DeSoto Parish School Board has voted to close Pelican All Saints High School.

The Times reports the board voted 7-4 Thursday night to accept the administrative staff's 2013-14 budget reduction package not only closes Pelican, but it also means anywhere from 25 to 50 employees could be without jobs by summer.

Superintendent Cade Brumley said the district is facing a projected $12.6 million deficit next year because spending is outpacing revenue sources. A similar deficit in this year's budget was plugged by pulling $10 million set aside for a construction project deemed not necessary.

In addition to closing Pelican, the budget reduction plan realigns Logansport Elementary and Logansport High into one school, cuts out arts and music programs and eliminates eight positions in central office.
