BATON ROUGE - Used motor oil can pollute Louisiana's soils and waters if it is not disposed of properly. The public can 'Be the Solution' and recycle oil. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's Drinking Water Protection Team has compiled some guidelines for disposal and lists of where you can take it for proper and safe disposal.
When disposing of oil never dispose of it on the ground, in a ditch, creek, river, lake, in a storm drain or in the garbage because it won't be treated. Don't mix it with anything else like water. Transfer your used motor oil to a clean leak-proof plastic container with a screw on top and tighten it to prevent leaking or spilling. Prior to discarding your used oil filter, punch an air hole in the dome end of the filter and allow oil to drain from the filter.
if you live in Lafayette Parish, you will find a list of places you can take your used motor oil for recycling at http://www.deq.louisiana.gov/portal/tabid/2953/Default.aspx
Used oil can be reused and improper disposal plays a big part in nonpoint source pollution. If all the used oil in the United States were recycled in a single year we would save over one billion gallons.
Be the solution and properly dispose of your used motor oil. If you have any questions call 225-219-3510 for the Drinking Water Protection Team. For more information on how to be part of the solution to nonpoint source pollution, visit the DEQ Web site at www.deq.louisiana.gov/watershed.
