Deputies cordoned off the neighborhood around St. Edwards School in New Iberia after a teacher in the parking lot across the street from the school was shot in the foot. Detectives say they believe the victim was struck with a pellet that was likely fired from an air gun.
Iberia Parish deputies say witnesses saw two juveniles flee the scene, and they believe they were involved in the shooting. Deputies also say they believe they know who the juveniles are and continue to look for them. It is still unclear if the juveniles attended the school or intended to shoot the 49-year-old female teacher.
Although school let out around 3 p.m., there were still children at the school in the aftercare program. School officials say the children were not in danger at any time.
The shooting happened at 3:50 p.m.
Neighbors said deputies are asked them to stay inside their homes as a swarm of deputies searched and secured the area. Roads were blocked for about four city blocks while a helicopter is circled the area.
The teacher was transported to Iberia Medical Center and is expected to fully recover.
