Deputies: As burglaries rise, residents should protect cars

Car burglaries are on the rise in St. Martin Parish, and, according to officials, those burglaries are preventable.

The St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office says that in recent weeks, thieves have hit unlocked vehicles across the parish, targeting multiple cars in a neighborhood at one time.

Deputies remind residents to lock their vehicles and to remove all keys, money, and other valuable items from the car before exiting. Officials also recommend parking in a well-lit area.

If you witness suspicious activity, call 911. If you are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch Group in your area, call Major Ginny Higgins at (337) 394-2606.
