Deputies arrest Lawtell man accused of hoarding more than 1,500 animals

St. Landry Parish Animal Control, St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, firefighters, and other law enforcement agencies are on the scene of a possible animal hoarding situation in Lawtell.

Deputies are reporting the arrest of Donald Lafleur, mid-50's, of Lawtell, on the charge of animal cruelty.

Neighbors had complained about the stench emanating from Lafleur's home on Hwy 752. When authorities arrived on the scene, they allegedly discovered more than 1,500 animals of numerous varieties.

St. Landry Parish officials said there was fecal matter all over the home and cages scattered both inside and out. St. Landry officials say they aren't certain if Lafleur was attempting to sell the animals.

A multi-agency investigation is ongoing. KATC-TV3 has a reporter on the scene and more details are forthcoming.
