Democrats accused of skirting campaign finance law

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Republican Jay Dardenne has accused his Democratic opponent's family of trying to sidestep limits on campaign contributions in the lieutenant governor's race by funneling money through the Democratic Party.
Democrat Caroline Fayard's family has given thousands of dollars to the Louisiana Democratic Party, which has been buying advertising time for Fayard. Dardenne suggested Wednesday that Fayard's family was trying to get around caps limiting donations to Fayard's campaign.
Dardenne's campaign says earlier this month, Fayard's parents and businesses donated $210,000 to the Democratic Party's political action committee, and a day later the PAC bought ad time for Fayard at a similar amount.
Louisiana Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck says the party decided how to spend its own money. Franck says Dardenne is complaining because the state Republican Party isn't spending any money to help his campaign.
A spokeswoman for Fayard says all contributions are in compliance with the law.
