The new Delcambre Seafood & Farmers Market opens Saturday, March 16, from 8 am - 1 pm under the oaks of the Shrimp Festival grounds. The Delcambre Market will offer seafood, produce, plants, and homemade food and crafts from vendors, while visitors soak up a Cajun music jam session and cooking demonstrations from Shucks! The Louisiana Seafood House!.
"The monthly Market will feel like a festival-we want shoppers to enjoy the local flavor of a farmers and seafood market, with the added benefit of delicious prepared foods like breakfast offerings for early risers and boiled crawfish for later in the day," said Marti Harrell, market manager.
Highlights of Saturday's Market include:
· Peeled crawfish, alligator filets and legs, crabmeat & seafood patties, Granger's Seafood
· Vegetables (we're between growing seasons) and homemade hot tamales, H & D Farm
· Starter plants and herbs, The Garden Shed
· Honey, assorted jellies, Hebert's Honey Co.
· Fresh eggs, plus handmade smoker's pots, Briley's Landscaping
· Fresh catfish (filets and whole), crawfish by the sack (and crabs, if they're running), LALIN's
· Hand-ground corn meal, grits, flour, Glen Domingue
Iberia Parish Homeschool 4-H will be selling their produce and crafts, plus grass-fed beef from Gonsoulin Ranch.
"The Delcambre Seafood & Farmers Market will be very family-friendly, with a children's area featuring a wetlands education display from Louisiana Sea Grant, and other fun activities," said Harrell. "We will also feature a student area each Market, showcasing the work of at least one young, local entrepreneur. This month, we have high school freshman Brandon Alleman with products he makes for his online store, Brandon's Duct Tape Crafts."
The Market opens at 8 am, and will offer breakfast foods for sale until mid-morning. LALIN's will be boiling crawfish on site, and Jim Richard from Acadiana Goodwill's Cajun Comic Relief-on-the-Road will be cooking up pastalaya and burgers for lunchtime. The cooking demonstrations from Shucks! The Louisiana Seafood House!-for visitors to sample-will begin at 9 am then on the hour until noon.
As the Market's mission is focused too on health, Iberia Medical Center will be on hand to offer blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) screenings. In addition, the entire outdoor market area has been designated as a "smoke free zone."
"We have worked to cover all the bases: register for our newsletter and pick-up a free Delcambre Market bag to carry around your purchases; ice and ice chests for sale if you need it (but bring your own!); door prizes; great food and music," said Harrell. "This is going to be a fun and healthy shopping experience, where you can relax and enjoy the day. Bring the family, but unfortunately we ask that you leave your pets at home."
Additional spring dates will be April 20, May 11 (grand opening), and June 1.
