SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Authorities say a prominent northwest
Louisiana eye surgeon died after a buck knocked him off his
motorcycle just outside of Shreveport.
LSU Hospital spokeswoman Elaine King says that 71-year-old Dr.
William Steen Jr. died Thursday afternoon.
Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says that Steen was wearing a
helmet when the deer darted into the road about 7 a.m. and knocked
him from the BMW, which rolled another 475 feet before hitting
thick brush. The deer was killed by an oncoming Jeep Liberty; the
driver was unhurt.
Steen was a founder of the Steen-Hall Eye Institute, which
includes laser vision correction, LASIK, and cataract surgery and
the outpatient eye surgery clinic of Willis-Knighton hospital.
