The Gumbo Ride provides an opportunity for local cyclists to collectively envision Lafayette as a bicycle friendly community and organize efforts to realize that vision in 2013 and beyond.
Cyclists are invited to participate in morning rides then share a gumbo and join in a vision and action planning session that both draws from and feeds into local government planning processes.
Like any good gumbo, the event aims to be a mélange, a mixture of incongruous elements, including BMX, fixie, road, mountain, cruiser, commuter, touring, fitness and other kinds of riders who make up Lafayette's diverse cycling community.
It includes a choice of three group rides to suit different interests and ability levels.
1) 9 a.m. start for a 45 mile loop outside Lafayette at an average pace of 18 m.p.h.
2) 10 a.m. start for a 12 mile loop inside Lafayette at an average pace of 10 m.p.h.
3) 11 a.m. start for 3 mile loop around Girard Park at an average pace of 5 m.p.h. for families with young children.
All rides will begin and end at the Girard Park Recreation Center.
The rides are weather permitting. Check www.bikelafayette.org for up-to-date information on inclement weather and rain date, if applicable.
The gumbo and vision and action planning session will take place in the Girard Park Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m., rain or shine.
The event is free and open to the public.
