LAFAYETTE, La.- Cycle Zydeco is returning and will be the kickoff event when Lafayette Parish celebrates Bicycle Month in April, 2013.
Cycle Zydeco, scheduled for April 4-7, 2013, will be promoted and managed by TRAI. (Transportation Recreation Alternatives In Louisiana) in 2013 and future years. It was run for ten years by the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission with assistance from bicycle tour experts Joan and Dick Williams.
Cycle Zydeco was established by the Lafayette Convention & Visitors Commission to promote Acadiana to cycling enthusiasts from around the world. The emphasis of this bike tour is to give the riders the total Cajun and Creole experience with live Louisiana music, local cuisine, swamp tours and Zydeco dance lessons so that they can experience our daily "joie de vivre".
Cycle Zydeco continues to draw people from far and wide to Acadiana to enjoy our world-renowned food, music, natural beauty and Louisiana hospitality.
Cycle Zydeco, which started off with 200 riders in its first year, has grown in popularity. While it once took two months to get 325 participants to register, it now takes just minutes for the maximum of riders to register.
This year, TRAIL will welcome riders come from 47 states and Canada. The four-day, 200-mile bike tour is designed to be ridden at a moderate or leisurely pace in order to absorb the Cajun and Creole cultures and food, enjoy the countryside's picture postcard views, and have the energy to dance to lively Cajun and Zydeco music at the end of the day.
The news of Cycle Zydeco is mostly spread by word of mouth through other bike rides throughout the nation. There has also been publicity on bicycling websites and blogs touting the fun that can be expected on this early spring ride. Cycle Zydeco participants experience the area's "joie de vivre" as they meander from Lafayette, through St. Martinville, Breaux Bridge, Henderson, Arnaudville, Opelousas, Mamou, and Eunice.
The Cycle Zydeco bike tour will end on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at FestiVÉLO; a kickoff party celebrating Lafayette's Bike Month in April. FestiVÉLO will be held at Parc Sans Souci from 10:30 am until 6:00 pm. Events are tailored for all ages and levels of cycling. FestiVÉLO will offer food and drink, live music, a customized and restored bike show, group bike rides, springs, and cycling skill classes. Visit Facebook's event page at http://goo.gl/YCGby.
