The Starbucks off of Pinhook and Kaliste Saloom has more to offer than just your daily coffee. There's also a singing Barista. Luke Nettles works the drive thru window, and as customers receive their order, he gives them a song upon request.
Starbucks' mission statement is "to inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time." Nettles took this to heart when he started singing for customers.
"I got bored of talking about the weather all day. So I thought I would use my talents to entertain people while they are waiting for their coffee," says barista Luke Nettles.
As he takes care of business at the window, he will sing for customers. Everything from Country tunes to Disney classics, Nettles tries to give the customer what they ask for. Several of the videos customers have taken of him have gone viral, including one sent into KATC (click here).
District Manager Kaili Broussard says Starbucks encourages baristas to bring their diverse personality to the job. Whether it is with a smile, friendly personality, or in Luke's case, through song, they want to make customers feel welcomed at their Starbucks. To encourage requests, on the drive thru window, there is a sign posted that says "Singing Barista on Duty".
Nettles has a passion for performing that started at a young age. At Lafayette High, he performed in the choir. He wants to one day exclusively entertain for a living; but right now, he is just excited that he can use his talents on a day to day basis off the stage. "I just love that I can use my talents to give back to the community that has given me so much," says Nettles.
