Today, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash on LA Highway 182 in Amelia which claimed the lives of two Morgan City men.
According to investigating Troopers, at 12:15 p.m., 31-year-old Luis Mota of Morgan City was driving a 2000 Ford Escort east on LA Highway 182. Mota was attempting to enter a parking lot when he turned in close proximity to a 2007 International freight truck driven by 52-year-old James Hughes of Thibodeaux. The right side of Mota's vehicle was struck by Hughes' vehicle. After initial impact both vehicles traveled off the roadway and stuck three unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot.
Hughes was restrained and sustained minor injuries. Two passengers in Mota's vehicle, 58-year-old Lamberto Mota of Morgan City and Carlos Camacho of Morgan City, were pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Luis Mota sustained moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital. Lamberto Mota was the only occupant restrained in the vehicle.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind drivers and passengers, that Louisiana Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to be properly restrained. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce the risk of injuries in most crashes.
