Lake Charles - On February 28, around 2:30 a.m., Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a convenience store on N. Cities Service Highway in Sulphur regarding a report of a vehicle driving off after stealing gas.
Deputies observed a vehicle matching the description driving westbound on I-10 near mile marker 21 and conducted a traffic stop. When deputies approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, Roger D. Thomas, Jr., 34, 2112 Ellis Drive, Westlake, they detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath, as well as very slurred speech.
After performing poorly on a standard field sobriety test, Thomas was arrested and transferred to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, where a breath intoxilzer test revealed he was over the legal limit.
Thomas, who has had 3 DWI arrests since 2009, was arrested and booked into Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI 4th; open container; and driving while under suspension for DWI. His bond is still pending.
CPSO Sr. Cpl. Dennis Hanisee was the arresting deputy on this case.
