COVINGTON, La. (AP) - A 22-year-old Covington man convicted of breaking into cars then trying to drive away from pursuing officers at 80 mph has been sentenced to 24 years in prison without parole.
The Times-Picayune reports state District Judge William Burris sentenced Martin on Tuesday following his October conviction of simple burglary and aggravated flight from an officer. That conviction came a few months after he reportedly was caught trying to break into a car parked just south of Abita Springs.
Assistant District Attorney Bruce Dearing asked Burris to sentence Martin as a two-time felony offender. Without that designation, he faced up to 14 years in prison. With it, the sentencing range was between seven and 28 years. Burris sentenced him in the upper range - 24 years of flat time.
