Court: Sentence For Carjacking Not Excessive

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The state 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal has ruled that a 57-year prison sentence given to a Hurricane Katrina evacuee who carjacked a woman and her mother in Alexandria was not excessive.
In 2009, Felton Hurst Jr. punched a woman and knocked her mother down while trying to steal the woman's purse and vehicle. He was caught by an off-duty Alexandria police officer and was charged with purse snatching, carjacking, simple robbery, two counts of aggravated battery and simple criminal damage.
A state judge sentenced Hurst to 57 years in a state
penitentiary and one year in parish jail. Hurst appealed, claiming the sentences were too harsh.
The 3rd Circuit reversed the parish jail sentence for one of the charges, which was reduced to a misdemeanor.
