WALKER, La. (AP) Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies have arrested a couple on nine counts of animal cruelty.
After receiving a complaint, deputies served a search warrant Monday where they found a number of dogs "left unattended in deplorable conditions."
Deputies say some of the animals were chained to a fence; some were running loose; and others were inside the home.
The case is being handled jointly by deputies and the Humane Society.
Arrested were 39-year-old Elgin John Melancon III of Walker and 39-year-old Mimi Melancon of Denham Springs.
They were both released on a $4,500 bail.
It wasn't immediately clear if the couple has an attorney.
