An employee of the Cote Blanche Salt Mine in St. Mary Parish died in an accident early this morning. According to North American Salt Company Director of
Corporate Communications Peggy Landon, Michael Charles was a longtime employee and was part of a crew performing maintenance when the accident happened. "Despite the immediate administration of emergency treatment by on-site personnel and first responders, the employee could not be revived when he arrived at Iberia General Hospital," she said. Where and how the accident happened has not been released, but Landon is looking into those questions.
"We extend our deepest sympathy to our employee's family and friends," said Gord Bull, Cote Blanche mine manager. "He was a valued employee who had a wonderful sense of humor and was liked by all. He will be deeply missed by everyone at Cote Blanche mine."
The company is working with officials to investigate the accident. "Safety is a top priority for all of us at North American Salt," Landon said.
