Corps monitors levees as waters rise on river

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - With the Mississippi River rising as it does every spring, the Army Corps of Engineers has begun monitoring the levees along the river.

The corps says it has begun patrolling levees up and down the river between Baton Rouge to the mouth of the Mississippi because water levels have risen above 11 feet at the gauge at Carrollton.

The agency says inspections will continue twice weekly until the water level drops at the Carrollton gauge.

The water level at the Carrollton gauge is 11.7 feet and the National Weather Service predicts a crest of 12 feet there on April 5.
