Corps Completes Levees Around St. Bernard Parish

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers says St. Bernard
Parish - the parish southeast of New Orleans swamped by Katrina -
has the best levee system its ever had.
On Friday, the corps said an 8.5-mile-long floodwall between
Verret and Caernarvon was done. It was the last piece.
Now, the corps says, the parish is fit to withstand a 100-year
storm. That will help attract insurers.
The entire parish of 60,000 people was flooded in August 2005
when Katrina hit. The area's population has not recovered.
Before the storm, the corps says the average height of the levee
system was 14 feet. Now, they stand at between 27 feet and 32 feet.
Army Corps Col. Robert Sinkler said St. Bernard folks have the
best levee system "in their history."
