NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Due to high river conditions, the Army Corps of Engineers has activated the first phase of flood fight procedures to monitor levees along the Mississippi River.
Closely coordinating efforts with local levee authorities, the New Orleans District said Tuesday it will begin patrolling the levees along the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to Venice this week and will continue to do so twice weekly while the river remains high.
Officials say the process is a proactive measure that is triggered when the river reaches 11 feet and is forecast to continue to rise. The National Weather Service's latest forecast shows a crest of 12.0 feet at the Carrollton Gage on Dec. 23.
