Coroner: Lake Arthur woman's cause of death is drowning

The Calcasieu Parish coroner says the Lake Arthur woman whose body was found earlier this year died after drowning.

On January 31, 2014, Lake Arthur Police responded to call about a woman's fully-clothed body discovered in a foot of water near West Sixth Street and Commercial Avenue.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old Lacie Fontenot; her body was sent to the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

The investigation was handled by officers with the Lake Arthur Police department and deputies with the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office.  Deputies say they could find no signs of a struggle, the body showed no signs of injuries or wounds, and no witness saw or heard anything unusual.  Investigators also believe she died where she was found.

The coroner's autopsy reported concluded the cause of death was drowning, resulting from hypothermia. She likely died Wednesday night; she was found on Friday.  Temperatures were below freezing both Wednesday and Thursday nights. The autopsy report also noted elevated  levels of illegal controlled substances in her body.
