Two men are arrested for copper wire theft in Opelousas. Opelousas Police charged Matthew Buck and Raheem Jamal Hicks with the felony theft of the copper utility wire valued at $2000.00. The charges stem from a theft at Prairie Construction located at 1344 Huntington Street in Opelousas.
The two were arrested after being spotted in a vehicle fitting the description of a vehicle that was observed in the area of the theft by an eyewitness. After a traffic stop, investigators were able to locate the stolen copper wire in the vehicle, along with various illegally possessed prescription narcotics including Lortabs and Hydrocodone.
The theft of cooper wire has been on the rise in recent years, due to the high value associated with selling it for scrap material.
