Copper Thefts

The Lafayette Police Department has investigated thirty nine (39) reported thefts of copper wire and tubing from different establishments beginning January 1, 2010 to present. The thefts range from taking the tubing from large capacity air conditioner units from businesses and homes where the suspects are stripping the copper wire. The thefts appear to be concentrated in the precincts one and four areas. These precincts border South I-10 along the Evangeline Thruway to the Surrey Street area.

The Lafayette Police Department is asking for assistance from citizens by observing any after hours traffic near or around businesses and abandoned homes in these areas. The suspect(s) appear to be targeting areas that are not well lit and possibly overgrown with shrubs. Cutting back on any overgrown shrubs and replacing faulty lighting would assist greatly.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about these incidents or the identity of the suspect(s) to call the Lafayette Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.
