LEESVILLE, La. (AP) - Construction has begun on a $21 million elementary school designed to serve military children in Vernon Parish.
The American Press reports the new South Polk Elementary School will have a capacity of 1,000 students in first through fourth grades.
The Vernon Parish School Board plans to move students from the current South Polk Elementary near the Army base at Fort Polk to the new building on Louisiana Highway 467. Some students from North Polk Elementary also will transfer to the new school.
The federal Defense Department is providing $18 million from the Department of Defense for the project.
