BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A New Orleans congressman is asking Gov. Bobby Jindal to reconsider his plans to close two ferries in south Louisiana.

U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond sent a letter to Jindal on Monday criticizing the shut-down of ferries at Edgard and White Castle.

Jindal recommended their closure in his budget proposals, to save $2 million a year in the transportation department. The ferries don't generate enough money from paying customers to cover their operational costs.

Richmond says shutting down the ferries will damage business activity in the region and create congestion and deterioration on highways that will have more commuters.

The governor's office says there are bridge crossings in both areas that provide alternate routes for drivers.
