VIDALIA, La. (AP) - The Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office says parish residents have lost thousands of dollars to scammers who pretend to be relatives who are abroad and need cash in a hurry.
Capt. David Hedrick tells the Natchez Democrat that the con artists use the Internet to learn family names to use for their stories.
He says one caller told his target that he was the person's grandson, and was in jail.
Hedrick says anyone getting such a call should check with other family members to find out whether it's for real, and whether the person who claims to need the cash is really out of the country.
Hedrick says if the call is questionable in any way, call the law.
