On Friday, October 5, 2012 at approximately 5:15 pm the Lake Charles Police Department received several calls from a concerned driver on I-210 between Ryan St and Nelson Rd, advising that a black female was seen darting in and out of traffic. One of the calls received stated that she had a small child about one year old with her in traffic. Officers of the Lake Charles Police Patrol Division immediately flooded the area in an attempt to locate this person.
Officer Robert Yeadon located the female subject in the area of Nelson and I-210. When he approached her, she was alone and had no child in her company. When questioned she stated "I had a child" but would give no further information. At approximately the same time the Police Department received calls from witnesses at the "Huddle Up Sports Bar & Grill" located at 1103 West Prien Lake Road, advising that while seated outside the establishment, near Contraband Bayou, witnesses heard a "Splash" in the water under the interstate overpass, but did not see what impacted the water.
With the evidence at hand and concerned that these two situations were connected, officers from Lake Charles Police Patrol and K-9 divisions, Deputies from Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and Troopers of Louisiana State Police began closing sections of the Interstate and performing searches of I-210 between Nelson Rd. and Ryan St. Simultaneously members of the Sheriff's Office Marine Unit were contacted as well as Wildlife and Fisheries to initiate a waterborne search for what officers now feared, may be a missing child. Sheriff and Police Dive Teams were contacted and divers from both agencies began conducting searches of Contraband Bayou. Members of the Coast Guard and OEP also arrived on scene and assisted in the ground search. After an exhaustive search lasting well into the night, no evidence of a child could be located by officers.
Pictures of the female subject were circulated through law enforcement channels as well as through media outlets in an attempt to identify her. Though she would not give any further statements, she was later identified by her fingerprints. This information lead LCPD Detective Joe Savoie to speak to the subjects husband, who stated that she had no children, nor does she have access to any children.
At this time no charges have been filed. Though all search efforts have been suspended, this case is still under investigation by Lake Charles Police Detective Colby Thompson.
