Another very cold start to the morning today under clear skies and a bright full moon. Most of the area dropped into the 30s this morning with the exception of the coastal sections. A few locations north of U.S. 190 dropped to the freezing point with Oakdale dropping to 30 and Alexandria and Baton Rouge hitting 29. Here in Lafayette the low dipped to 36 degrees, the record was 29.
The unusual cold weather is being blamed on a dip in the jet stream over the eastern half of the United States, with snows still flying over the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. Freezing temperatures will felt as far south as the Florida Panhandle.
The latest freeze on record here in Lafayette was on April 13, 1940 when the temperature slid to 32 degrees.
