NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A cockpit voice recorder captured the sound
of a bang and a loud air noise about 17 seconds before a helicopter
crashed into a marshy area of southeast Louisiana last year,
killing eight people.
A transcript released Thursday by the National Transportation
Safety Board says one of the pilots asked, "What the hell
happened?" after hearing the bang.
The other pilot responded, "Low rotor."
The first pilot said, "I cannot hear you."
Those were the final words spoken by the pilots before the
crash, which killed both pilots and six passengers and critically
injured a lone survivor.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but
investigators believe a bird struck the Sikorsky S-76C before it
crashed near Morgan City on Jan. 4, 2009.
