Cite des Arts holding auditions for 'Little Shop of Horrors'

Cité des Arts will hold auditions for the hit musical comedy, Little Shop of Horrors, on Sunday, July 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday, July 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cité des Arts (109 Vine St., Lafayette).

There are 4 principle roles (3 men, 1 woman), 3 doo-wop girls, 1 voice of a bad-tempered plant, several minor speaking roles, and a chorus of skid row inhabitants. Those auditioning must be at least 16 years old and are asked to prepare at least one minute of a song to sing. Cold readings from the script will be available at auditions. Performances of the production will be October 30 through November 9, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings with Sunday matinees.

From the award-winning songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a down-and-out skid row floral assistant named Seymour who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant from outer space with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon the plant, Audrey II, grows into an ill-tempered, tough-talking, R&B singing carnivore who offers Seymour fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. This musical comedy is an affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies and is based on the 1986 film by Roger Corman, which starred Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, and the 1960 screenplay by Charles Griffith.
