Cinema on the Bayou Festival Kicks Off

The 6th Annual Cinema on the Bayou Festival kicked off Wednesday night at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. The film festival celebrates movies, filmmakers and the entertainment industry in south Louisiana, and it's also a boost to Acadiana's economy.

"We have arrived, and film has arrived to Lafayette and there's great young filmmakers walking around too," said Pat Mire, Arts Director for the Festival.

Mire also loves making films, especially here in Acadiana.

"I'm really passionate about making some inroads in what's going on in film and the future of film for Acadiana," he said.

Louisiana offers some of the best tax breaks for the film industry as well. John Petersen with the Lafayette Entertainment Initiative said that puts our state at number three in the country for making movies. Only California and New York have more films made in those states.

"Filmmakers don't work 24/7. They want to eat good food. They want to have fun and so do their crews, so part of my message is there's no better place to do that than here," said Petersen.

Acadiana is also just the spot to recognize those movies and film makers, like Dennis Mohr from Toronto.

"To me, I've been in larger festivals but this to me is really what I like. You know, you get to meet people one-on-one," said Mohr.

His documentary, "Disfarmer", premiered Wednesday night to kick off the Cinema on the Bayou Festival.

"These films are for the most part Louisiana premieres, which means you won't see these films anywhere else," said Mire.

Cinema on the Bayou concludes Sunday evening, with a special screening of Mardi Gras films and a panel discussion on urban and rural Mardi Gras. Here is a complete schedule of Festival events:
