New information is being released about the circumstances leading up to the death of three-year-old Julian Madera. An arrest affidavit of Madera's mother, Laura Smith, states the young boy had confided in her the night before his death that he was afraid of her boyfriend, murder suspect Landon Broussard.
Smith his charged with Principal to First Degree Murder and Broussard charged with First Degree Murder of Madera. The coroner's office has ruled Madera's death a homicide, citing several traumatic injuries as the cause of death.
The affidavit also states the mother witnessed her boyfriend push and kick the child, and force him to eat fecal matter. Smith told police she had "expressed concern for her child's injuries and the welfare for the victim as early as November 27, 2012, but her boyfriend refused to allow her to bring him to the hospital and she was afraid to disobey him."
The documents indicate Smith knew of the abuse, but did nothing to stop it. Deputies go on to write that she "had several opportunities while she was away from her boyfriend at school to seek aid for her child, but did not." Instead, Smith "repeatedly left her son in her boyfriend's care while she attended class."
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office said on Saturday that they are continuing to investigate the case and are currently interviewing anyone who recently had contact with Madera to find out if he appeared injured or abused.
