A St. Martin Parish grand jury has indicted a man on a first degree murder charge after the 91-year-old woman he's accused of shooting died from her gunshot wound. Darren Duhon was initially charged with attempted second degree murder in Mildred Hebert's death. She was shot on September 1 and died about four months later on January 11. The St. Martin Parish District Attorney's office determined the shooting was a factor in her death. "We will formally announce our decision whether to seek the death penalty Tuesday morning," Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars said.
Hebert was one of three people shot in Breaux Bridge on Sept. 1. Duhon is accused of shooting Hebert's daughter and her husband, former Breaux Bridge Police chief Charlie Thibodeaux. Hebert and his wife survived the shooting, and Duhon was arrested the same day in Abbeville.
