Rayne police have announced charges will be upgraded against Shaqueta McDade. She was initally charged with four counts of negligent homide. McDade now faces four charges of second-degree murder. Police Chief Carroll Stelly says McDade was at a club in Church Point when the fire broke out Saturday. Stelly adds this was not the first time the children were left home alone. He says his department received a call Friday night about a fight in the neighborhood. When officers arrived, they found the kids home alone and took them to the police station. McDade told police that the situation was the result of a misunderstanding. She thought the children were in the care of their grandmother. The grandmother told police she thought the kids were with McDade.
