If you're planning to hit the roads this weekend, keep in mind there's a change to a notorious speed trap in Acadiana. The speed has changed in parts of Maurice.
The mayor of Maurice says it comes down to safety. From now on, the speed limit is going down on the southside of town.
Heading south from Maurice to Abbeville, the speed limit used to be 65 miles per hour, now it's 55miles per hour. Drivers all across Acadiana know the speed limit is strictly enforced, so make sure you watch out for the new speed limit. The mayor says the new speed limit gives drivers a chance to gradually slow down while entering Maurice.
"We had some growth on the south end of town. We had some concerns about the speed as they were coming in, for the safety of our citizens, as well as the patrons of the businesses," said Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot. "We wanted them to look and decrease the speed. We're not out to make money giving tickets. We want to protect our citizens, as well as the people that traverse through the village."
The mayor says the change has been two years in the making and the signs are now up.
