Every ten years people can earn extra money as Census takers.
In this year's tough economy going door-to-door appeals to locals more than ever.
Job seekers flocked to the Census Hiring Day in Morgan City on Thursday.
"I'm here for a little extra work because I'm unemployed right now and I'm trying to take care of my family," said Douglas LaSalle.
For many, it is a matter of making ends meet while in between jobs.
"I moved a year ago back home from New York and it's been a struggle... when this popped up I thought it was great," says Tanya Bouduin.
One former Census-taker got a more permanent job after her experience.
"I was looking for any opportunity and when this came up, since I hadn't worked with the Census it was an opportunity," says Andrea Loyola, who is now a Census Media Specialist.
The job hunters have to fill out a lengthy application and take a short written exam, testing basic math and English.
The Census Bureau is still hiring.
The Census Hiring Day is at the Morgan City Recreation Center March 18th until 5:00pm.
